Psychodynamic Counselling Hertford: Healing Through Understanding

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

— Carl Jung

Sarah Dennis MBACP

I’m Sarah, a qualified psychodynamic counsellor offering a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental space for adults in Hertford. I believe that counselling can provide an opportunity to slow down, understand yourself more deeply and explore the experiences and patterns that may be affecting your life today.

I have over 20 years experience working with adults within social and mental health settings and have worked as a counsellor for the past five years. My professional experience, alongside my own personal journey, has given me a genuine understanding of how life can bring challenges, uncertainty and times when we can feel stuck or overwhelmed.

My own journey towards becoming a counsellor grew from both my professional and personal experiences. Through my own life experiences, I came to appreciate how challenges can also create opportunities for growth, self-understanding and change. This led me to want to offer others the same kind of safe space to think, feel and make sense of what they are experiencing.

Alongside my professional life, I’m a wife and mum of two. I enjoy spending time with my family, yoga, reading, being in nature and creative activities. I also value continuing to learn and develop both personally and professionally.

Today, I bring together my professional knowledge, counselling experience and genuine human experience to offer a safe, supportive and non-judgemental space where you can explore what is happening in your life at your own pace.

Psychodynamic Counselling in Hertford, Online and Telephone

Psychodynamic counselling explores how our past experiences, relationships and emotions can shape the way we think, feel and relate to ourselves and others today.

Sometimes we can find ourselves repeating patterns, experiencing strong or confusing emotions, or feeling stuck without fully understanding why. Together, we can gently explore what may be beneath these experiences and begin to make sense of them.

This can include looking at early relationships and experiences, how these may have influenced your sense of yourself and others, and the ways you have learned to cope with difficult feelings. We can also explore what happens within relationships, including the therapeutic relationship itself, as this can offer valuable insight into how you experience and respond to others.

Psychodynamic therapy isn’t about dwelling on the past or trying to “fix” you. It’s about developing a deeper understanding of yourself, making connections between past and present, and creating the possibility for meaningful change.

The aim is not to tell you who you are, but to create a safe space where you can discover more about yourself at your own pace.

Anxiety

Anxiety can affect how we think, feel and respond to everyday life. Counselling can provide space to understand what may be behind anxious feelings and develop a greater sense of calm and confidence.

Childhood Trauma

Difficult experiences in childhood can continue to affect how we feel, think and relate to others as adults. Counselling can provide a safe space to explore these experiences and their impact at your own pace.

Areas of Support

I offer a warm, non-judgemental space to explore the thoughts, feelings and experiences that may be affecting your life.

Depression

Depression can leave you feeling low, disconnected or overwhelmed. Counselling offers a safe space to explore these feelings and begin to understand what may be contributing to them.

Narcissistic Trauma

Experiences within narcissistic or emotionally difficult relationships can affect self-esteem, boundaries and relationships. Counselling can help you make sense of what you have experienced and reconnect with your own needs and sense of self.

OCD can involve intrusive thoughts, fears and patterns of behaviour that feel difficult to control. Counselling can help you explore the thoughts and feelings behind these experiences with compassion and without judgement.

OCD

Relationships

Relationships can bring connection and fulfilment, but they can also be a source of confusion, conflict or pain. Counselling can help you explore relationship patterns and develop a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

Although these are some of the areas I have particular experience and interest in,

I work with adults experiencing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

You don’t need to have a diagnosis to come to counselling.

We can explore whatever is bringing you to therapy, at your own pace.
